For under-12m commercial fishing vessels

If you go over, the engine stops.

Every crew member wears a small tag. If someone goes over, Guardian stops the engine in about two seconds and sounds the alarm, so the boat stays close. It works with the engine you already have, and the FaSS grant pays up to 80%.

  • Fits in 1–2 hours*
  • Set up from your phone
  • Nothing to do at sea but wear the tag

*Typical outboard fit. Inboard diesel systems can take up to half a day.

How Guardian works

1 · WEAR

Everyone wears a tag

A small floating tag on the wrist or lifejacket. Up to 25 tags per boat, so the whole crew is covered.

2 · DETECT

Guardian watches every tag

The Guardian unit at the helm keeps track of each tag. If one goes in the water, it reacts in about two seconds.

3 · STOP

Engine stops, alarm sounds

The engine cuts and an 85dB alarm and light go off at the helm. Restart after 7 seconds and go straight back.

Easy to fit

Works with the engine you have

Outboards, inboard diesels and sterndrives, one to three engines, 12V or 24V. Guardian wires into your existing stop switch. A typical outboard fit takes 1–2 hours, and many owners do it themselves. Inboard diesels can take up to half a day.

Easy to set up

Ready in minutes with the app

Download the free OLAS app, connect the Guardian, name each tag and test it. That's it. The cut-off still works if the phone is flat or left ashore.

Easy to use

Nothing to remember at sea

Put the tag on and go fishing. No lanyard to clip on or snag while hauling. Working alone? Solo Mode texts your position to someone ashore.

How is the boat steered?
Where is the outboard's kill cord or stop switch?

Tiller boats are fine as long as the engine has a separate electric stop button or kill-cord switch. Outboards with the kill cord built into the tiller arm can't be connected yet.

How is the engine stopped today?
Does the stop solenoid draw more than 2A?

Most diesels do. If you're not sure, leave it and we'll include the relay box your engine needs.

    Getting back aboard

Stopping the boat only helps if the person in the water can get back on, so FaSS funds this kit too.

      Your package

Copy this and send it to us or your installer. It's everything needed to quote the job and start your grant application.

          Getting your 80% grant

Five steps. We help you with the paperwork.

          1. 1

            Get a written quote

Send us your package summary. You get one written quote listing the kit and the fitting.

          2. 2

            Apply online

Apply online on the MMO's FaSS system under health and safety, with your quote and vessel details. We can help you fill it in.

          3. 3

            Wait for the go-ahead

Don't order or pay for anything until the MMO acknowledges your application. Anything bought before then can't be claimed.

          4. 4

            Fit and test

Fit the kit, test it with every tag, and take a couple of photos for your claim.

          5. 5

            Pay, then claim back 80%

Pay the invoice, send it in with proof of payment, and the MMO pays 80% back to you.

Good to know: FaSS is for vessels in England, and the grant must come to at least £500, so put Guardian, fitting and recovery kit on one application. Kit that's already a legal requirement for your boat isn't funded. Questions about the scheme: FaSS.queries@marinemanagement.org.uk
